People visiting "The Baluard" Museum

If you count yourself an art lover, you’ve got rich pickings as a guest of ours at a Hoposa hotel or vacation apartment on Mallorca. The island comes well-endowed with artistic heritage and a slew of galleries and museums celebrating it, and among them are some exceptional institutions focused on modern and contemporary art. Here are several of the must-see art museums on our island!

Centro Cultural Andratx (CCA)

Established in 2001 and enjoying renown throughout Europe, the Centro Cultural Andratx (CCA) serves as a 4,000-square-meter celebration of contemporary artists from Mallorca and all over the world. Besides the always-absorbing CCA Gallery, the museum maintains a dedicated space, the CCA ESPAI, for solo exhibitions by contemporary artists from the Balearic Islands.

The CCA ESPAI is currently spotlighting Gitte Norrman (through December 23rd), while the CCA Gallery is featuring Symphony of Silence by the German artist Nik Nowak as well as Dark Was the Night, selected works by some of the CCA’s artists-in-residence—both shows running through December 16th.

The CCA also hosts multiple artist studios as well as a museum shop and café.

Es Baluard Museum of Modern & Contemporary Art

Palma’s Es Baluard Museum of Modern & Contemporary Art opened in 2004 and includes a collection of better than 700 pieces of modern and contemporary art. Among those globe-spanning holdings, noted Balearic artists—J. Mir, S. Rusiñol, H. Anglada-Camarasa, and others—come well represented.

Es Baluard would be worthy of a visit based on the quality of its expertly curated galleries alone, but the museum is also distinctive for its architecture: It occupies a 16th-century fortress, the Baluard de Sant Pere.

Other Mallorcan Modern & Contemporary Art Museums

Also in Palma, the Museum of Spanish Contemporary Art displays a small but top-quality collection of works by such iconic Spanish artists as Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali: pieces once owned by Joan March, a Mallorcan businessman whose career saw him ranked among the wealthiest people in the world.

In Soller, meanwhile, you can explore modern art (and a handsome Art Deco building) at Can Prunera, many of the works stemming from the Soller Art Collection (Fundacio d’Art Serra).

Visit Mallorca’s Modern & Contemporary Art Museums on a Hoposa Vacation

Here at Hoposa, we’ll provide you with luxurious coastal rooms, suites, or rental apartments within easy reach of the above institutions—only a small (if exceptional) sample of the art museums and galleries Mallorca hosts.
