Escalones del Calvari
In the old town of Pollença, a stone staircase climbs straight and challenging to a small chapel on top of a hill. These are the Escalones del Calvari (Calvari Steps), which attract visitors every year who are interested in the history, views and deep-rooted traditions of Mallorca. Climbing them is a simple but meaningful activity, combining light exercise, traditional surroundings and an unrivalled visual reward.

What are the Escalones del Calvari?

Located in the heart of Pollença, the Escalones del Calvari (or Calvary Steps) are a staircase of 365 steps leading up to the small Calvari chapel, from where you can enjoy some of the best panoramic views of northern Mallorca. Each step represents a day of the year, and each step you take connects you to centuries of devotion, effort and tradition.

A bit of history: devotion among stones

The Calvari chapel dates back to the 18th century. This place has been the centre of processions, especially during Holy Week, when the famous Via Crucis del Viernes Santo (Good Friday Way of the Cross) is celebrated: a living representation that travels the steps of Calvari and is one of the most impressive moments in the Pollença calendar.
For centuries, this ascent symbolised spiritual sacrifice. Today, although many do it for sport or tourism, respect for the place and its history remains intact.

When to visit: the best time to go up

Although you can climb at any time, the early morning or late afternoon are ideal: you avoid the heat, enjoy spectacular light and, if you're lucky, you'll encounter very few people.
Avoid the middle of summer. Bring water, a hat, comfortable footwear and, of course, your camera or phone: the views are worth every click.

Tips for climbing the Escalones del Calvari

  • Observe the Stations of the Cross: each section has sculptures representing religious scenes.
  • Ideal for families: although caution is advised, many people climb with children.
  • Accessibility: not suitable for pushchairs or people with reduced mobility, but there is an alternative access by car at the rear of the chapel.

The views from the summit

Once you reach the top, you are rewarded twice over: with the simple, charming Calvari chapel and a 180º view over Pollença, the Serra de Tramuntana mountains and the Mediterranean. It is one of those places that stays etched in your memory.

Special events: the Way of the Cross on Good Friday

If you are in Pollença during Holy Week, don't miss the Good Friday Procession. With dim lights, drums and sepulchral silence, the staircase becomes the setting for one of the most impressive celebrations on the island. The descent of the articulated Christ is a moment of pure emotion.
